Cloud Gate is the name of the oldest known dance in China. In 1973, choreographer Lin Hwai-min adopted this classical name for the first contemporary dance company in any Chinese speaking community.

Through Lin Hwai-min’s choreographies, the company transforms ancient aesthetics into thrilling modern celebration of motion.

Cloud Gate has toured extensively with frequent engagements at the Next Wave Festival in New York, the Sadler's Wells Theatre and Barbican Centre in London, the Moscow Chekhov International Theatre Festival, the Movimentos Festival in Germany, and the Internationales Tanzfest NRW directed by Pina Bausch.

2014 is undoubtedly another fulfilling year for Cloud Gate! Following the damage caused by a fire to its main rehearsal studio in New Taipei’s Bali Township in 2008, the Company will have a new home in Danshui district after receiving overwhelming support from different parties. The new complex will comprise several performance venues, as well as other facilities such as offices and a lecture hall.

Of its recent highlights, the most significant is definitely Rice, a new piece created by Lin Hwai-min in celebration of Cloud Gate’s 40th Anniversary. Following a well-received and large-scale opening night, this highly acclaimed production is touring locally and will tour internationally. Indeed, audiences in Hong Kong will have the opportunity to experience the power of this much-loved dance, as Cloud Gate is bringing it to Hong Kong soon!
