When facing arts subsidy cut and budget deficit, Lieven Bertels optimistically believes that challenges and difficulties do come along with opportunities. He said in the interview that "it's going to be a challenge but also an opportunity because you come in unbiased and can ask all the wrong questions with an open mind.'' As an expert on innovative and artistic programming, he successfully re-established Holland Festival as a famous festival in the world.

Mr Bertels is the Director of the Sydney Festival, Australia’s largest and most important international arts festival. Before moving to Australia, he was the Artistic Coordinator for the Holland Festival (Amsterdam), overlooking the music programme and its dramaturgy. Mr Bertels helped to re-establish the Holland Festival's rich programme mix for which this now 65-year old festival is famous, often developing novel ways of presenting the arts to the ever more discerning public of today. To know more about his experience on innovative and artistic programming, please do come to the summit.

This is another interesting interview of our summit speaker Mr Lieven Bertels. Mr Bertels has studied Musicology at the University of Leuven (Belgium) and received an MA in Composition at the University of Durham (UK). His strong musical and artistic background may help him to feel for the artists and know how to respect them. In the interview he said “I was on my knees with presents in the backstage area of the theatre to convince this 72-year-old grand master of Bunraku puppetry to come to Amsterdam.” It may be an extraordinary case, but it is to remind us that one of the qualities good arts administrators should have is to respect artists and arts work they are going to present.[link_to | http://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/stage/interview-lieven-bertels-20120216-1t9tj.html | Full Text of interview]
