Grand Ethnic Dance Drama
Masquerade
Masked Ritual Dance
Exhilarating Tribal Music
A Cultural Heritage Showcase
Ethnic dance drama Masquerade takes the ancient culture of nuo and the folk music of the Dong tribe as its creative inspiration. It tells the tragic story of a folk artist who hides behind the nuo mask all of his life. Young and gifted, Cang is fascinated by the arts of the past, but he feels ostracised because of the scar on his face. Yet once he dons the mask for the stage, his confidence grows. One day, he meets the beautiful Chan from the Dong tribe. The purity of their affection stirs his long suppressed heart. But fate stands against them. A blizzard covers all traces of the bitter conflict, leaving only a broken mask. A power struggle between man and god, a tussle between life and death, all ends in between reality and dream.
Nuo culture is an ancient exorcism ritual and is hailed as a national intangible culture heritage. Nuo dance is dated to the 3rd century BC and is a ritual entertainment for both mortals and gods. The masked performer represents the god who eliminates the plague in the legends. Masquerade recreates the unique artistic power of nuo culture through exquisite choreography, folk music from the Dong tribe, charming staging and a moving story.
Masquerade won the Gold Prizes for Choreography and Performance at the 7th Lotus Award China National Dance Competition in 2009.
Masquerade will be staged at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre from 16 to 18 August 2013.
