Renowned theatre director, actor and drama educator, Tang studied and worked in Paris from 1986-92. He was trained as an actor in l’Ecole de la Belle de Mai and obtained a MaÎtrise Diplôme in theatre studies at the Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle and had worked as assistant director and actor in Théâtre de la Main dOr before returning to Hong Kong.

Tang Shu-wing sees theatre as a way to experience life through self-discovery. For him, physical theatre and minimalist aesthetics are the best ways to realize his vision. His unique style has dubbed him “Alchemist of Minimalist Theatre” and “one of the most talented theatre directors of Hong Kong”.

He has taught in the School of Drama of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts from 2004 to 2011 and has served as its Dean in the last two years. He is the current Artistic Director of Tang Shu-wing Theatre Studio. Its mission is to bring quality theatre works to wider audience. The Studio is currently funded by the Arts Capacity Development Fund of the Home Affairs Bureau and is the resident theatre company of the Hong Kong Arts Centre. It positions itself as a centre for theatre research and creation, the first one of its kind in Hong Kong, believing that quality works can only be born out of serious and in-depth research programmes. The operational goals of the Studio are: 1) to create long running productions for the city of Hong Kong, thus contributing to its creative industry; 2) to promote cultural exchanges so that the theatre of Hong Kong can become more accessible to international audiences.

Tang has directed over forty productions of drama, dance and opera. His representative works include Phaedra, Hamlet, Princess Chang Ping, Titus Andronicus, Titus Andronicus 2.0, King Arthur, Rubik’s Cube and its Aftermath, Detention and Thunderstorm. His works have been presented in many cities including the Globe to Globe Festival of the London Cultural Olympiad last year where Titus Andronicus was performed in Cantonese at the Shakespeare’s Globe. In this July, it will be performed in Germany. Detention has been performed 52 times since its creation, with an accumulated audience of over 10000. It attracted 5 star media reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe last year and will have a four week run in Hong Kong in this August, followed by tours in Europe, North America and China in the next two years. This work has become the testing ground of whether Hong Kong can nurture a long running production.

Tang’s major awards include three times Best Director in the Hong Kong Drama Awards; Outstanding Production Award of the Hong Kong Dance Awards; Award for Arts Achievement (Drama) by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council; the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service Award; Certificate of Commendation by the Secretary for Home Affairs; l’Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication; Shenzhen-Hong Kong Life Award: Arts and Culture Figure of the Year Award by Southern Metropolis Daily.
