Since 1991, June has marked the time when the Malta Festival Poznań presents its international programme of theatre, music and dance events. Since 2010, the Idioms – which are crucial to understanding the contemporary world, have constituted the thematic core of the festival. Idioms determine the area of artistic and intellectual search, they are a laboratory enabling analysis of violent transformations of the surrounding world. Each Idiom program is prepared by a different curator. Idiom curators have included Stefan Kaegi, Sven Åge Birkeland, Romeo Castellucci.

In 2014, the fifth edition of the Idiom will direct our attention towards Latin America. The curator, Rodrigo García, is one of the most original and brave artists in contemporary theatre. He joins Latin America with Europe owing to his life and artistic experience. In his works, García submits capitalism, exploitation and global regulations to harsh diagnosis in a particularly personal and engaged manner. He sees the world as a place where greediness dominates, as an excuse for violence and injustice. It sanctions the metaphysical void we agree to live in.

Apart from the Idiom, the festival consists of projects by young artists in urban spaces, a dance and theatre program, films, discussions, and an especially extensive music and concert offer.

Generator Malta is a name of a wider project written into the city's topography and aiming at creation of new places.  With reference to the atavistic relation between humans and the soil, we start with creating a place together and with being together in a group of people who perform various social roles in their everyday life; including artists. It is also an educational project where everyone learns from everyone. The assumption behind is: to unleash the potential of people who share common space every day, but remain strangers in the public sphere.

Melting pot, municipal character, combination of motifs and forms, cooperation with local communities, city as a theme for art, multidisciplinarity - these are the values continuously present at Malta, making up its philosophy.

As you might know, Poznań is one of the cities competing for the title of European Capital of Culture 2016. With the city’s hugely diversified range of cultural activities, receiving such honour would be the icing on the cake!
