This is a play of a little paper cutter with enormous storytelling energies. The Puppet and Its Double gives us “Paper Cut Dreamer,” making us experience the simple and true beauty in the increasingly complicated world of theater.

~ Chien-yin LU (Theater Critic)

The show is highly sophisticated and stylized in a way that transports the viewer to another realm.

~ Larry Reed (Director of ShadowLight Productions, Pioneer of contemporary shadow theater)

“Paper Cut Dreamer” brings the idea of paper cutting into theater, where the play explores

philosophical questions like yin and yang, emptiness, surrender, as well as questions of life. This play takes a minimalist approach and returns to the relations between material and story. The director, Chia-yin Cheng, places human actors and rod puppets on the same stage, and creates a unique way of narration of paper cut figures and human body movement. The story tellers begin with blank sheets of paper and find tremendous energy in cutting the paper, which represents creation and destruction at the same time and gives strong voices to history and imagination. It experiments an aesthetic of theater in which less is more. “Paper Cut Dreamer” resembles a magical fable, with the collaboration of incredible talents from  Asia, including Hong Kong stage designer Man-tung Tsang, Malaysian playwright Choon-eiow Koh and Taiwan renowned costume designer Ching-ju LIN . Come and experience the most exciting interpretation of a mythological story!

The Puppet and Its Double Theater

Founded in 1999 in Taipei, the company was established by some enthusiastic puppet artists with the viewpoint that “everything can be a puppet” and that “the puppet brings a dynamic expression for the contemporary theater”. Promoting the puppet as a tool for freely expressing the performing arts, the company creates an abundance of work that exhibits the visual media with a rich and infinite imagination. The styles of puppet used include hand puppets, string puppets, rod puppets, table-top puppets, shadow puppets, object theater, and the combination of puppet and actor performing on the same stage. The company pours their emotions and feelings into their performances to give the puppet a believable stage life, and they find new ways to interact with audiences of all ages. Both of their show “I Am Another Yourself (2002)” and “Der Schönste Moment (2009)” won the annual Tai-Shin Art Award as “Top 10 performances of the year.” The company is frequently invited to perform in international festivals because they are recognized as an outstanding professional Taiwan theater group.
