Highlight Recap – “Arts Administrator 101” Series - Career Talk on Chinese Opera in Hong Kong and Site-visit of Yau Ma Tei Theatre

“Arts Administrator 101” Series - Career Talk on Chinese Opera in Hong Kong and Site-visit of Yau Ma Tei Theatre organized by Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association was successfully held on 29 July at the Yau Ma Tei Theatre.

The event consists of two different parts: Yau Ma Tei Theatre Backstage Tour and Chinese Opera Career Talk. We are very glad that Ms Yuko Cheung (Project Manager, The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong) and Ms Almen Tang (Assistant Manager, The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong) had organized three backstage guided tours on Yau Ma Tei Theatre, to introduce the history of the Theatre, and to explain the Backstage operation of Xiqu to the event participants.

Being classified as the “Grade II Historic Building”, Yau Ma Tei Theatre has been converted to a performance venue which supports different Xiqu performances and trainings. By visiting the backstage and frontstage, participants had been introduced with the production process of Xiqu, and learnt about the traditions of Xiqu.

Furthermore, it is our pleasure to have Ms Yuko Cheung, and Mr Sun Kim Long (Artistic Director, Cantonese Opera Young Talent Showcase; Vice President, The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong) from The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong, and Ms Naomi Chung (Producer, Performing Arts (Xiqu)) and Mr Rae Wu (Senior Manager, Technical & Productions (Performing Arts)) from West Kowloon Cultural District Authority to talk about the career development of Xiqu in Hong Kong. Different issues ranging from necessary characteristics to become successful art administrators on Xiqu to the potential development, job natures and duties had been addressed by the speakers. Job vacancies related to Xiqu production had also been listed out by the speakers to participants, introducing the ways to join the industry.
